About this issue

This October 1901 issue of a New York pulp weekly features the opening installment of "Captain Kyd, The King of the Black Flag; or, The Witch of Death Castle" by Colonel Prentiss Ingraham, a prolific adventure writer. The serial unfolds a Gothic romance set on the Irish coast near two rival castles. Sir Hurtel of Castle Crag, a brooding nobleman, lost his beloved Lady Lenore to his wealthy brother, the Earl of Belmont of Castle Cor, who married her for ambition. Tormented by her betrayal, Hurtel rides recklessly into a violent storm on his vicious horse Red Satan, nearly perishing when waves sweep him into the bay. Meanwhile, the "Surf Angel"—a beautiful Gypsy girl named Gipsy Jule who lives near Castle Crag—watches the castle's revelry from outside. She gained her name rescuing a shipwrecked crew and is known for fearlessness and ambition. The narrative intercuts between Hurtel's despair and Jule's presence at Castle Cor, building toward their convergence amid the tempestuous night and romantic entanglements between the brothers.
