About this issue

This January 1905 issue of this pulp magazine features "Old Cross-Eye, the Maverick-Hunter; or, The Night-Riders of Satanta County," a Western story by Captain Frederick Whittaker. The narrative opens with a roundup on Judge Collingsworth's Texas ranch in Satanta County. Cowboys and ranchers gather to brand cattle, including colorfully nicknamed men like "Limpy" Balstrop, "Punch" Burleson, and "Deaf" Smith. When they discover a herd of wild, unbranded long-horned bulls—mavericks—in a timber grove, the animals charge when provoked by a man in a red blanket. The stampede scatters the cowboys, but a mysterious hunter wearing red sounds a bugle, frightening the herd and bringing it under control. The story emphasizes frontier labor, cattle management, and the personalities of Texas ranchers adapting to changing economic conditions.
