About this issue

This issue of the pulp magazine contains "A Sport in Spectacles; or, The Bad Time at Bunco" by Wm. R. Eyster. The story opens twenty years into Bunco's mining town history with Edmund Farrell dying and naming Hunter Browne executor of his estate, which includes a gold claim map and provisions for his two children—a boy and a girl. When Farrell's bitter sister Mrs. Waring attempts to claim the estate, Browne defeats her legally, later facing a pursuing detective named Prim seeking Farrell for a past murder. Both are rebuffed. Twenty years later, Browne, now prosperous from mining ventures, is approached by Judge Bradley regarding settlement of the estate. The narrative then shifts to an incoming stagecoach carrying passengers bound for Bunco, including the notable Miss Kinie Vandeleur, accompanied by a gray-haired gentleman, and Professor Elderberry—a young man in spectacles competing for her attention against other miners like Plumb Center Pete. The excerpt cuts off as various travelers exhibit interest in the young woman.
