Beadle and Adams Weekly, Vol. XI, No. 10 (1881) "The Doctor Detective" is a serialized mystery tale by George Lemuel set in New York's lower-class districts. Doctor Diamond, a somber physician known for his low fees, is summoned to Hell's Kitchen by street boy Hoppergrass to attend a dying woman. He finds the woman beyond medical help, but is struck by her beautiful daughter, Dura Eldon, who reveals she has recently acquired money through unspecified means, hoping to save her mother's life. The mother dies before morning. Diamond, preoccupied by thoughts of Dura and his troubling first encounter, is then hastily summoned again by a rough longshoreman. The narrative emphasizes urban poverty, instantaneous love, and fate, combining sentimental melodrama with detective elements.
