About this issue

This issue features "The Masked Mystery of the Tower," a serial by Col. Thos. Hoyer Monstery, author of "The Demon Duelist." Set at the Tower of London, General Reid, the Constable, finds his eighteen-year-old daughter Rose unconscious in the Armory after hearing her scream. She awakens in terror, repeatedly asking if her father saw "it"—some mysterious creature she encountered. Reid recalls she frequently visited the Armory alone to imagine stories about the armored figures. Young Lieutenant Howard, on duty that evening, cryptically remarks "who would have thought it?" upon seeing her senseless form. Rose's Indian ayah Suryia tends her while Reid's surgeon arrives and administers an opiate. The doctor questions Reid about how anything could breach the Tower's security, suggesting something genuinely entered the Armory.
