About this issue

This Western pulp serial opens with Barbara Howland, a desperate young woman on horseback, confronting three armed men led by the smooth-talking Samuel Slick, who claims to be a lawman seeking to arrest her for her husband's murder—a charge she insists is fabricated. As she holds them at gunpoint, a fourth assailant, "Pious Dick," creeps up from behind and drags her from her horse during the struggle. A tall, dark-complexioned stranger then appears with drawn revolvers, demanding her release. Slick protests he's enforcing the law, but the newcomer declares himself indifferent to legal authority and refuses to let the ruffians harm the girl. The confrontation escalates as Dick uses Barbara as a human shield while the stranger maintains his advantage, threatening to shoot anyone who harms her. The narrative emphasizes Barbara's courage and desperation against overwhelming odds.
