About this issue

"The Man with the Evil Eye: The Romance of a Romp with a Royal Rogue," by George C. Jenks, appears as the featured serial in this September 1892 issue of Beadle and Adams's publication. The narrative follows a circus company traveling downriver aboard the steamboat Parole. Conflict emerges when a young female performer named Belle boards late, pursued by Leonard Merville, a dark, menacing lion-tamer who claims she has promised to marry him and threatens her with death if she refuses. When Merville recklessly antagonizes one of the circus lions—named Monarch—during a feeding scene, the animal pins him to the cage floor. A cheerful, rotund character named Sam Wilson, nicknamed "Fearless Sam," rescues Merville by striking the lion with an iron bar. The rescue prompts Merville to immediately return to the cage seeking revenge on the animal, whipping the now-cowed lion. The narrative combines circus spectacle, romantic menace, and animal-taming action.
