This serialized romance by Dr. J. H. Robinson, appearing in Beadle's Dime Novels (July 30, 1879), presents a medieval adventure set during Spain's Granada conflict. Sir Raoul Mornay, an English knight bearing Ferdinand's dispatches to the Moorish King Muley Aben Hassan, encounters the Knight of the Sleeping Leopard on a mountain road. Despite their opposing faiths and allegiances, the two exchange courtly greetings and agree to suspend combat until their respective missions conclude. The Moorish knight conducts Raoul to the Vermilion Tower, a fortress castle in the Alpuxarras mountains, offering hospitality while warning him against romantic entanglement with a maiden dwelling there. The narrative emphasizes chivalric honor, elaborate descriptions of armor and heraldry, and mounting intrigue regarding the castle's mysterious inhabitants.
