About this issue

This December 1892 issue of Beadle's Weekly features the opening installments of a serialized detective story and a murder trial narrative. The lead serial, "Sentenced by His Own Father: A Story of the Life Secret of a New York Judge" by William H. Manning, centers on Homer Curtis, imprisoned for the murder of his former business partner Morris Strong, shot on a West Street pier. Attorney Albert Pollard attempts to defend Curtis while his devoted fiancée Mary Wolf seeks evidence to prove his innocence. Mary discovers a mysterious paper containing Curtis's birth date, dropped by a strange visitor at her father's house—the rough-featured "Briny Ben" Wolf. Her discovery raises questions about her father's connection to the case. The story emphasizes circumstantial evidence, courtroom procedure, and the investigation surrounding Strong's death. The jury deliberates Curtis's fate as witnesses describe finding the victim's body and the recovered murder weapon.
