About this issue

This issue features "The Masked Men of Grand Canyon: A Romance of the Dread Driver of the Colorado" by Colonel Prentiss Ingraham, known for his Buffalo Bill novels. The serial follows Wallace Weston, a fugitive who murdered Sergeant Manton Mayhew in a quarrel and escaped execution with Buffalo Bill's assistance, fleeing into the desert. Weston assumes the identity of Andrew Seldon, finds a gold-mining map among a dead man's possessions, and settles in the Grand Canyon with a partner named Lucas Langley. A mine collapse nearly kills him before he discovers Langley alive. Weston reveals his past: he's fleeing not only for murder but pursued by three triplet brothers (Manton, Hugh, and Richard Mayhew) who wronged him. He killed Hugh in an earlier encounter and fears meeting Richard. The narrative cuts to Buffalo Bill meeting "Doctor Dick," a wealthy gambler from Last Chance mining claim, at a remote rendezvous in the Grand Canyon region.
