About this issue

This serial by Harold Payne features detective Thaddeus Burr and his friend, retired physician Doctor Matthew Watson, investigating a suspicious death on Long Island near Flushing. A young man is thrown from a runaway wagon in front of Watson's house and dies without regaining consciousness. Investigation reveals the lap-robe found in the wreckage bears the initials of Samuel L. Sutter, an eccentric recluse living nearby in a swamp. When questioned, Sutter admits he loaned the robe to the stranger, claiming the young man had stopped asking directions and complained of chilliness. However, Burr's examination suggests poisoning—he detects peculiar odors on the victim's lips. A hard-featured woman and Tom Gillam's missing hat complicate the mystery. Local officials dismiss the detective's concerns despite his suspicions of foul play.
