About this issue

This 1896 Beadle and Adams dime novel by George C. Jenks, author of detective serials, begins with a confrontation in Devil's Canyon's Golden Glory saloon. Gambler Abe Kimball ejects Mexican Pete Morrelli in a dramatic standoff after Pete accuses him of cheating at faro. Outside, Morrelli encounters two outlaws—Jim Brill and Cock-eyed Sam—and meets "Bad Thunder," an Apache warrior. The three men conspire to murder a half-breed boy approaching the saloon. Their assassination attempt is thwarted when their "Indian" accomplice reveals himself as Christopher Vance, alias Keno Kit, the Arizona Detective, who single-handedly defeats all three assailants. The narrative then flashes back one week to explain the conspiracy: a well-dressed city agent meets with the outlaws in the Golden Glory Hotel, presenting official-looking documents and proposing a lucrative scheme involving mysterious policies.
