About this issue

This issue (No. 92, June 17, 1896) contains "Velvet Bill's Vow," a frontier romance by Colonel Prentiss Ingraham, subtitled as companion to "Go-Won-Go the Red-skin Rider." The narrative opens with Captain Moonlight, a road-agent leading a lawless band, plotting to capture the Indian Pony Rider and force him to reveal a valuable mine's location by threatening the life of Daniel Darwin, a mad miner held captive. After the Pony Rider and Frank Powell, the Surgeon Scout, track Moonlight to his island lair, an explosion from a powder keg buries the outlaw alive in his cavern. The story then shifts to Miner's Roost, where the mysterious Velvet Bill—a skilled gambler dressed in blue velvet and gold—mysteriously appears at the funeral of a wealthy mining investor, leaving wild flowers upon the grave in apparent private mourning before departing without explanation, puzzling the townspeople and attracting the widow's curious attention.
