About this issue

The Dragoon Detective: A Man of Destiny is a serialized Western adventure tale by Dr. Frank Powell, bylined "White Beaver." The narrative follows an elderly miner in the Rocky Mountains who discovers a substantial gold deposit in a remote gulch near the rough mining settlement of Gilt Edge City. The miner, called "the Judge" by locals, has been secretly accumulating wealth—sending sixty thousand dollars via stagecoach over six weeks—to repay those he allegedly wronged years earlier and restore honor to his name and family. The arrival of a mysterious stranger, Richard Ford (known as "Deadly Dick"), who checks into the local Barracks Hotel and displays particular interest in the old miner, sets events in motion. The story details the settlement's colorful inhabitants—miners, gamblers, sharpers, and men of various nationalities—and culminates with the stranger visiting the miner's cabin under pretext of Landlord Champ's introduction, suggesting impending complications to the miner's redemptive quest.
