About this issue

"Lost in the Polar Regions" by Captain Fred Whittaker is a serialized adventure narrative. The installment begins with a fishing expedition off Nantucket, where Uncle Jabez Coffin, a retired whaling captain, takes his nephews Reuben and Jonathan Macy blue-fish hunting. The encounter with a massive horse-mackerel (likely a large shark) leads to Jonathan harpooning the creature, which drags the small boat, the Lively Sally, far out to sea. As the fish weakens, the crew prepares to lance it. The narrative introduces the Macy family: Jonathan Macy, the boys' father, is away seeking seals and furs in Davis Strait aboard the Pride of Nantucket; Reuben is a scholarly Harvard student; Jonathan is an experienced young seaman. The OCR is degraded in places but the content is primarily maritime adventure and family relationships.
