About this issue

This 1884 Beadle and Adams dime novel serializes "Dandy Jack: The Outlaw of the Oregon Trail" by T.C. Harbaugh. Long Lige Butler, a seasoned wagon guide leading emigrants westward, discovers his camp raided and a youth named Dandy Jack, a girl named Estil, and a wagon stolen by his hired scout Luke Whittles. Butler meets John Shotwell on the trail and vows to pursue them into dangerous Snake country, only to learn Shotwell is the infamous bandit Oregon Leon, who warns him off. The narrative then shifts to the stolen Conestoga wagon, where the bound youth Dandy Jack and free but imprisoned girl Estil travel. Luke Whittles drives the wagon relentlessly across alkali plains toward unknown destinations, having overpowered the boy before fleeing. The serial emphasizes pursuit, captivity, and frontier danger across the Oregon Territory landscape.
