About this issue

This is a Frank Tousey catalog and story issue from November 18, 1904. The front matter advertises Tousey's instructional pamphlet series—covering magic, mesmerism, palmistry, hypnotism, mechanical tricks, letter writing, athletics, and fortune telling—each priced at ten cents or three for twenty-five cents. The featured story, "At Pittsburg Landing; Or, The Boys in Blue's Greatest Battle" by Lieut. Harry Lee, concerns the Fairdale Blues, a youth militia company commanded by Captain Jack Clark. During the Civil War buildup to the Battle of Shiloh, the Blues conduct a reconnaissance mission upriver aboard the gunboat Alert. They locate a masked Confederate battery hidden behind fallen trees. After artillery exchange proves ineffective, Clark lands his men to attack from the rear. Through disciplined advance and bayonet charge, despite heavy fire, the Blues overrun the battery, routing the Confederate defenders, who surrender. Clark restrains his men from unnecessary slaughter.
