During the vestry procedures, Clerk Trim discovers a clandestine marriage entry: Francis Raynor has secretly married Margaret St. Clare. The revelation spreads immediately through the parish gossip network, particularly via Mrs. Trim to the druggist's shop, where Blase Pellet—who had harbored suspicions about Rosaline Bell and Raynor—realizes his earlier concerns were mistaken.
