About this issue

This serialized novel by Mrs. Henry Wood (author of East Lynne) continues in Chapter XXXI, "Humiliation," in the November 1876 Argosy. The Raynors endure reduced circumstances at Laurel Cottage, surviving through Edina's fifty pounds yearly income and relentless management. Charles Raynor, reduced to a copying clerk at law offices Prestleigh and Preen, suffers profound degradation—once believing himself heir to Eagles' Nest, he now labors under gentlemen who regard him as socially inferior. Despite initial desperation to escape, he remains bound by duty to support his impoverished family. Over two years, hardship transforms his arrogant nature into humble steadfastness. When his sister Alice loses her governess position at Richmond, Charles seizes an overheard opportunity: the Preen household needs a governess. He approaches Mr. Preen with Alice's credentials, revealing their family's tragic history—their estate unlawfully claimed through a discovered later will. Mr. Preen grants Alice an introduction to his wife.
