This issue of The Argos (October 1879) continues "Called to the Rescue," Chapter XXVIII: "A New Appointment." The boy Paul has been sent to the Lakes as a spy on Dr. Mowatt. There, Miss Joseph encounters Dr. Mowatt arriving unexpectedly in the garden, presenting himself on business with Sir Marcus and the Archdeacon. The narrative blends domestic Victorian drama with intrigue involving spiritualism, espionage, and mysterious poisoning.
