This November 1883 installment of the serial novel Winifred Power depicts Martha Freake's final days. Winifred reflects on her isolation—her mother distant, her relationships fractured—with only Martha and her friend Dolly remaining. As Martha weakens from illness, Winifred devotes herself to nursing her. During a conversation about Martha's years of suffering before Winifred's companionship, an unexpected visitor arrives: Mrs. Russell (Aunt Mary), resentful and grievance-ridden, whom Winifred had previously wronged. Mrs. Russell forces her way to Martha's bedside despite Winifred's pleas, attempting reconciliation through flattery and self-justification. Martha, summoning unexpected strength, rejects her with moral clarity, refusing false forgiveness and condemning Mary's lack of genuine remorse. The encounter leaves Mary shaken; Dolly gently removes her to another room where she dissolves into self-pitying tears.
