About this issue

"Polaris—Of the Snows" by Charles B. Stilson (published in All-Story Cavalier, December 1915) opens an adventure tale in the Arctic wilderness. A young man named Polaris discovers his dying father and receives a final exhortation to journey northward with an important message. After burying both his father and his mother (Anne and Stephen, whose names are inscribed on a coal cliff tomb), Polaris burns his isolated cabin, carefully kills his remaining sled dogs to prevent their suffering, and departs with a seven-dog team bearing Greco-Roman names. Carrying a mysterious packet containing his father's message and his own identity, Polaris sets out across the Antarctic snow prairie toward an unknown world of men, equipped with rifle, revolvers, and supplies. The narrative emphasizes his extraordinary physical adaptation to extreme conditions—possessing inhuman strength and stamina equal to his wolf-descended dog team.
