“Jungle Jim”
Mark Kidwell's Vietnam War zombie horror series delivers a gut-punch with this 2013 Image Comics volume, "Jungle Jim." The cover by Nat Jones puts you face-to-face with a battle-worn gas mask topped by a "JIM"-stenciled helmet and ringed with barbed wire — and reflected in those eerie amber lenses, a writhing mass of undead hands reaching outward, blood trickling down the glass. It's a beautifully grim piece of cover art that captures the series' unique blend of wartime dread and flesh-hungry horror, with colors by Jay Fotos adding just the right sickly, blood-soaked atmosphere.
