About this Collection

This collection presents Will Eisner's seminal graphic novel, originally published in 1978, which is widely regarded as the first modern graphic novel. It gathers four interconnected stories set in a 1930s New York tenement, exploring themes of faith, loss, and urban struggle, with the title story following a man who confronts God after his daughter's death. This DC edition reprints the work that established Eisner's legacy as a pioneer of sequential art and the graphic novel format.

"A Contract with God" is a powerful, deeply personal story from Will Eisner, who wrote, drew, inked, and lettered every page with haunting precision. It follows Frimme Hersh, a man who makes a solemn vow to God during his journey from Europe to America, only to face a devastating loss that shatters his faith. When a baby girl appears on his doorstep, Frimme’s devotion is tested in ways he never imagined—leading to a turning point that changes everything. The cover, also by Eisner, captures the weight of that moment in quiet, striking detail.
