It gathers four interconnected stories set in a 1930s New York tenement, exploring themes of faith, loss, and urban struggle, with the title story following a man who confronts God after his daughter's death. This DC edition reprints the work that established Eisner's legacy as a pioneer of sequential art and the graphic novel format.
"A Contract with God" is a powerful, deeply personal story from Will Eisner, who wrote, drew, inked, and lettered every page with haunting precision. It follows Frimme Hersh, a man who makes a solemn vow to God during his journey from Europe to America, only to face a devastating loss that shatters his faith. When a baby girl appears on his doorstep, Frimme’s devotion is tested in ways he never imagined—leading to a turning point that changes everything. The cover, also by Eisner, captures the weight of that moment in quiet, striking detail.
