A Vida Fluminense #64
"Capítulo IV" from *A Vida Fluminense* #64 (1869) offers a vivid, satirical glimpse into Rio de Janeiro life through the eyes of Nhô-Quim, whose simple purchase of a hat spirals into a series of comically absurd encounters. Written and illustrated by Angelo Agostini—whose sharp, expressive style captures the era’s quirks—this installment follows Nhô-Quim through a day of bewildering transactions, from a dishonest shoeshine to a mirror-induced confrontation and a heated dispute over a confectionery’s baffling pricing. The story’s humor lies in its deadpan observation of social customs and economic confusion, all rendered with the distinctive hand of one of Brazil’s earliest cartoonists.

Nhô-Quim finally buys a hat. When he leaves, he gets a shoeshine - as was customary at the time - but is deceived in getting only half the service. Nhô-Quim enters the famous "Carceller" confectionery and almost fights with his image reflected in a huge mirror. He fights with salespeople because he can't understand how they sell something for 22 thousand with the promise of paying 2 million. And finally he has a fight with the seller of the "Carceller" because he doesn't like the ice cream.
