“He Was a Pale, Effete Shred of a Man --- With Nothing to Recommend Him”

In this striking early entry from Chris Ware’s *Acme Novelty Library*, a quiet, off-kilter moment unfolds as Quimby’s day spirals into surreal chaos—knocking on a door with no answer, chasing a leaf, losing his hat to the wind, and ultimately discarding his own head in frustration. With precise, haunting detail, Ware’s signature style brings to life a world where the mundane teeters on the edge of the absurd, all rendered in his distinctive black-and-white interiors and striking cover art.

Quimby knocks on a door but no one answers. A leaf falls nears him, he kicks it and then chases it. His hat then flies off his head and winds up on a weather vane. He climbs up to get it but it then flies off. Annoyed, he removes his own head and tosses it to the ground. A superhero mouse helps him down to the ground.
