All-American Western #121
In "The Unmasking of Johnny Thunder," a 1951 DC Western gem, a young man named Johnny Thunder steps up when the Arroyo Gang kidnaps Sheriff Tane, leading the townsfolk to believe he’s the sheriff’s long-lost son. Written by Robert Kanigher and brought to life with sharp, dynamic art by Alex Toth and Sy Barry, this issue blends frontier tension with a quiet mystery, as Johnny’s bold claim sets off a chain of events that tests loyalty and identity—without revealing the truth behind his actions. The cover, also by Toth and Barry, captures the moment with classic Western flair.

When the Arroyo Gang kidnaps Sheriff Tane, Johnny Thunder thinks they must have killed his father, and tells the townsfolk that he is really Sheriff Tane's son. Johnny takes out the whole Arroyo Gang single-handedly and happily finds his father alive. But his secret identity remains safe, as everyone assumes he was only honoring Sheriff Tane by his earlier declaration.
