“Dread Past”

In "Dread Past," young nurse Alice grapples with a haunted history after a year in prison, seeking redemption in a quiet town where her skills are urgently needed. When her past resurfaces in the form of Jack, now a patient in the very hospital she’s rebuilt her life at, the weight of her choices comes crashing down. With art by Herb Familton and letters by Sam Rosen, this powerful story unfolds with quiet intensity, while Bernard Baily’s cover captures the tension in a single, haunting image.

Young nurse Alice becomes a “wild-eyed, frenzied dope addict” through the influence of Jack. They’re both arrested and sent to prison; after a year, Alice is released and moves to a small town where the local hospital desperately needs nurses. She falls in love with Mark, the hospital director and head surgeon. Jack is brought into the hospital for emergency surgery and dies on the operating table. Alice thinks she subconsciously killed him. She admits her past to Mark. Mark says he still loves her and Jack died as a result of his wounds.
