“Mission to Malooka”

"Mission to Malooka" kicks off in *Amazing Adventures* #5 (1951), a 10-cent comic that sets a tense stage with Captain Hawkins, a man at odds with Commandant Luther Mynot over a past grudge. When Mynot’s son Groll falls ill on Hawkins’ ship, the captain defies protocol to save him—only to be punished with a banishment to Malooka after a Gykosian raid on a distant station. Murphy Anderson’s dynamic art, with inks by both Anderson and Frank Giacoia, brings the space drama to life, while Allen Anderson’s cover captures the isolation and urgency of the mission.

Captain Hawkins is disliked by Commandant Luther Mynot for how Hawkins' father rode Mynot when he was younger. Mynot assigns his son Groll to Captain Hawkins' ship, the Penumbra. Groll gets space sickness. Instead of putting Groll adrift according to protocol, Hawkins returns Groll to the hospital. Gykosians raid the scientific station on a planetoid named Gykos that Hawkins was supposed to check on. This causes Commandant Mynot to banish Hawkins to Malooka where the Gykosians are holding the scientists from Gykos.
