Issue #6, 'Last Goodbyes,' marks a pivotal emotional and narrative turning point in Mishkin, Cohn, and Colón's 12-issue maxi-series: for the first time, Amy Winston fully discloses the truth about Gemworld to her adoptive parents, Herb and Marion, closing the gap between her two lives that had defined the series' dramatic tension. The issue also introduces Lord Garnet, who becomes Amethyst's physical combat mentor and one of her most enduring Gemworld allies, meaningfully expanding the cast of what was already DC's most ambitious female-led fantasy of the early 1980s — a title that predated She-Ra: Princess of Power and other 'magical girl' properties. Within the broader arc of a series now regarded as an underrated classic of female representation in superhero comics, #6 is the hinge on which the second half of the maxi-series swings, trading secrets for open alliances on both Earth and Gemworld.

History

The maxi-series was created by writers Dan Mishkin and Gary Cohn with artist Ernie Colón, edited by Karen Berger, and grew from a concept originally pitched under the title 'Changeling' — a name abandoned when Beast Boy claimed it at DC, prompting the jewel-themed renaming that gave the entire world its identity. By issue #6, the creative team was well into its stride, with George Pérez providing cover pencils (inked by Colón) across the series' middle run, lending the book a visual prestige that reinforced DC's investment in the property. Letterer John Costanza and colorist Tom Ziuko were consistent collaborators throughout, and the series' logo — noted on the issue #6 letter page — was designed by Todd Klein.
