About this Issue

Avataars: Covenant of the Shield #1 is the opening chapter of Marvel's most ambitious sword-and-sorcery reimagining of its own universe, transplanting the Avengers, X-Men, Fantastic Four, and Spider-Man into a wholly constructed fantasy world called Eurth — populated by dozens of original avatar characters who serve as thematic mirrors of their Earth-616 counterparts. The issue is historically notable for staging the first appearances of the entire Champions of the Realm ensemble (Captain Avalon, Blackthorn, Greenskyn Smashtroll, Merman, Witchfire, Skorch, Swift, Ch'll, and others) alongside the full Minions of Evil roster, making it the single densest first-appearance issue the mini-series produced. It also represents a rare moment when Marvel's cosmic architecture — the Living Tribunal, Eternity, Infinity, and the Shaper of Worlds — was used as an in-story rationale for world-building, with those beings literally presiding over Eurth's creation as a framing device. Though the series ran only three issues, this debut chapter documents a genuinely creative response to late-1990s genre experimentation and stands as a curiosity of the 'Marvel Year 2000' publishing landscape.

"Before the World Was Made" kicks off Avataars: Covenant of the Shield #1 with a mythic, grounded tone as the Shaper of Worlds crafts an alternate medieval realm to study Earth’s heroes. Captain Avalon, protector of Eurth, is thrust into a desperate quest when Black Blade kills his wife and steals his son, forcing him to rally his allies in a race across a world shaped by divine design. Written by Len Kaminski and illustrated with rich detail by Oscar Jimenez, with inks by Eduardo Alpuente, colors by Joe Rosas, and letters by Paul Tutrone, the issue’s cover by Jimenez and Alpuente captures the epic scale of this origin.

History

Writer Len Kaminski originally conceived Avataars as a twelve-issue project, but Marvel's severe financial difficulties at the turn of the millennium made a run of that length commercially untenable, so the creative team compressed the concept into a three-issue prologue intended to test reader interest in a longer saga that was ultimately never greenlit. The first issue — scripted by Kaminski, pencilled by Oscar Jimenez, inked by Eduardo Alpuente, colored by Joe Rosas, and lettered by Paul Tutrone — was edited by Tom Brevoort under editor-in-chief Bob Harras, with the cover date of September 2000 and an on-sale date in late July 2000. The story's framing conceit, that the Shaper of Worlds constructs Eurth under the watch of cosmic arbiters as an experiment to better understand Earth's heroes, gave Kaminski room to reinterpret virtually the entire Marvel roster through a medieval-fantasy lens without disrupting mainstream continuity.

  • First appearances (villains): The Minions of Evil faction, including Black Blade, Deathmaster, Ill Wind, Moonchild, Savagri, Scorpius, Slag, and others, all make their first appearances here.
  • Creative team: Written by Len Kaminski; pencils by Oscar Jimenez; inks by Eduardo Alpuente; colors by Joe Rosas; letters by Paul Tutrone; edited by Tom Brevoort; editor-in-chief Bob Harras.
  • The series was conceived as a twelve-issue project but was cut to three issues due to Marvel's financial difficulties at the time, with this issue functioning as a prologue to a longer story that was never published.
  • The narrative premise frames the entire fantasy world of Eurth as a deliberate creation by the Shaper of Worlds, supervised by the Living Tribunal, Eternity, and Infinity, making the cosmic characters' appearances integral to the plot rather than cameos.
  • Each principal Eurth character is a fantasy-world counterpart to a known Marvel hero or villain: Captain Avalon mirrors Captain America, Greenskyn Smashtroll mirrors the Hulk, Merman mirrors Namor, Blackthorn mirrors Hawkeye, Witchfire mirrors the Scarlet Witch, Skorch mirrors the Human Torch, Swift mirrors Quicksilver, and Duke Ctranj mirrors Doctor Strange.
  • The X-Men counterparts — collectively called the X'Changelings across the series — and Eurth's version of Spider-Man (Webslinger) do not appear until later issues; this first issue focuses on the Avengers-analog Champions of the Realm.
  • The cover of issue #1 was produced by Oscar Jimenez and Eduardo Alpuente; the issue carries a Comics Code Authority stamp and runs 36 pages total including cover.
