Batman #436
Batman #436 is the first appearance of Tim Drake, the character who would become DC's third Robin and one of the most enduring figures in the Batman family — making it one of the most consequential single issues of the Copper Age. Unlike his predecessors, Tim was conceived from the outset as a self-motivated detective who deduced the identities of both Batman and Robin entirely on his own, giving the Robin legacy a radically different philosophical foundation than the orphan-driven origin shared by Dick Grayson and Jason Todd. The issue also launched 'Batman: Year Three,' a four-part arc that used flashbacks to the murder of the Flying Graysons as a framing device for exploring Batman's grief-stricken spiral following Jason Todd's death, structurally bridging 'A Death in the Family' and the forthcoming 'A Lonely Place of Dying.' Tim Drake's debut here set in motion a character who would go on to headline 183 issues of his own ongoing Robin series (1993–2009), making the introduction in this issue one of the most narratively productive first appearances in Batman history.

Writer Marv Wolfman and penciler Pat Broderick created Tim Drake in direct response to the editorial mandate — driven by Batman editor Dennis O'Neil — to find a new Robin after the fan-voted death of Jason Todd in 'A Death in the Family.' O'Neil deliberately structured Tim's introduction to flow through Dick Grayson's approval, hoping that readers' affection for the original Robin would ease acceptance of the new one. Wolfman designed Tim to stand apart from both Grayson and Todd by giving him a strong intellect, an intact family, and a sense of justice untethered from personal tragedy. The character's first name was a tip of the hat to Tim Burton, director of the 1989 Batman film that was releasing the same summer, and the covers for the entire 'Year Three' arc (issues #436–439) were provided by George Pérez, who also handled interiors for the immediately following 'A Lonely Place of Dying' crossover.
Trivia · 9 facts

- Story title: 'Batman: Year Three, Part 1: Different Roads' — the opening chapter of a four-part arc running through Batman #436–439.
- The issue's cover was illustrated by George Pérez, who provided covers for the entire 'Year Three' and 'A Lonely Place of Dying' arc (Batman #436–442).
- Interior inks by John Beatty; Tim Drake's debut appearance occurs in a flashback sequence depicting the night of John and Mary Grayson's circus murder, where the young Tim and his father Jack Drake are shown meeting the Flying Graysons.
- The plot also involves Dick Grayson (as Nightwing) returning to Wayne Manor for the first time in two years, coinciding with the parole hearing of Anthony Zucco — the mobster responsible for the Graysons' deaths.
- Tim Drake was named after director Tim Burton, whose Batman film premiered the same summer as this issue's release.
- Batman editor Dennis O'Neil intentionally introduced Tim through Dick Grayson's orbit so that reader goodwill toward the original Robin would transfer to the new character; the strategy proved successful, eventually resulting in Tim's own 183-issue solo series (Robin vol. 4, 1993–2009).
- The 'Batman: Year Three' arc (beginning here) was later collected in a standalone Deluxe Edition hardcover by DC Comics (ISBN 9781799502432), collecting Batman #436–439.
