About this Issue

The Batman Beyond Special Origin Issue is the first time Terry McGinnis's origin as the new Batman reached a mass audience in comic-book form, functioning as the gateway document for an entire generation of readers who encountered the character through the animated series rather than the direct-market miniseries. Distributed free of charge in mid-1999, it brought the DCAU's futuristic Gotham — with its cyberpunk aesthetic, aging Bruce Wayne, and rookie teenage Batman — to readers who might never have picked up a newsstand copy, cementing Terry McGinnis as a legitimate inheritor of the Batman legacy in the public imagination. Its multiple print runs across different promotional partners also make it a useful artifact of how Warner Bros. leveraged its unified animation-and-publishing ecosystem to build audience for a new franchise.

History

The issue is a promotional reprint of Batman Beyond (limited series) #1 (March 1999), itself the first comic adaptation of the animated series that began airing on The WB on January 10, 1999, created by Paul Dini, Bruce Timm, and Alan Burnett. The comic interior was written by Hilary J. Bader, penciled by Rick Burchett, inked by Terry Beatty, colored by Lee Loughridge, lettered by Tim Harkins, and edited by Darren Vincenzo, with the cover drawn and inked by Bruce Timm. DC produced at least three distinct printings: the June 1999 base edition (carrying a Jell-O advertisement on the back cover and a blank white rectangle on the front for retailer stamping), an October 1999 Six Flags amusement-park exclusive (with a PlayStation advertisement on the back), and a July 2000 third printing tied to the Batman Beyond: Return of the Joker home-video release.
