“The Fall and Rise of Anna Kharkova Part Two of Three”

In "The Fall and Rise of Anna Kharkova Part Two of Three," Anna Kharkova faces a brutal tribunal orchestrated by Merkulov, her bitter rival, as personal grudges collide with wartime politics. With Mouse—now a Hero of the Soviet Union—risking everything to defend her, their fates hang in the balance, leading to a desperate act that throws both into prison. Written by Garth Ennis and brought to life by Russ Braun’s bold art and Tony Aviña’s vivid colors, this gripping chapter of Battlefields #5 (2013) pushes its characters to the edge, with Garry Leach’s intense cover capturing the storm brewing beneath the surface.

Anna is brought before a tribunal whipped up by Merkulov, who hates her since his own display of cowardice before Kursk. Mouse, now a major and a Hero of the Soviet Union, intervenes, but uses up all her influence in doing so, and both of their careers are dead-ended. When Merkulov announces that they will be discharged Anna makes an unauthorized flight in a fighter jet and shoots down an American over Korea. Not only is Anna beaten and imprisoned, but Mouse is too.
