Anna is brought before a tribunal whipped up by Merkulov, who hates her since his own display of cowardice before Kursk. Mouse, now a major and a Hero of the Soviet Union, intervenes, but uses up all her influence in doing so, and both of their careers are dead-ended. When Merkulov announces that they will be discharged Anna makes an unauthorized flight in a fighter jet and shoots down an American over Korea. Not only is Anna beaten and imprisoned, but Mouse is too.
