Battlefields #8
In "Motherland Part Two of Three," Garth Ennis and Russ Braun deliver a gripping chapter of Battlefields, where Captain Anna, newly promoted and leading her own flight, faces a brutal ambush during a desperate mission to halt a Nazi advance. As she grapples with her past isolation, she finds unexpected strength in command—and in the quiet resolve of her comrades—while a poignant moment with The Colonel reveals a bond forged in loss and duty. The story's emotional weight is matched by Garry Leach’s evocative cover, capturing the tension and gravity of the moment.

The Colonel, clearly enjoying Anna's company, takes her for a drive and informs her that because of heavy losses she is promoted back to captain, and given command of a flight. The entire unit is ambushed as they try to blunt the Nazi attack, but she commands well, breaking away from her insistence on going it alone, even praising and encouraging Mouse. When she is named a Hero of the Soviet Union she makes a drunken pass at the colonel, who tells her that although his wife was killed by Germans he considers himself married until the last invader has been driven from their homeland.
