History

DC announced the Before Watchmen initiative in February 2012 after years of internal discussions and public controversy, with Minutemen #1 chosen as the line's debut issue, arriving on June 6, 2012. Cooke himself initially declined when DC co-publisher Dan DiDio first approached him, only reversing course roughly a year later when a specific narrative hook — treating Hollis Mason's 'Under the Hood' as a sanitized public draft concealing darker truths — crystallized in his mind and genuinely excited him. Cooke served as sole writer and artist on the series, with Phil Noto providing colors and Len Wein scripting the backup feature; the issue also carried cover variants by Jim Lee (a 1-in-200 retailer exclusive) and Michael Golden (a 1-in-25 retailer exclusive), and was polybagged at retail with a digital download code. Original Watchmen colorist John Higgins illustrated the backup serial 'The Curse of the Crimson Corsair,' written by Len Wein — a deliberate echo of the 'Tales of the Black Freighter' story-within-a-story device Moore and Gibbons used in the original series.
