“The Dinner Date”

In "The Dinner Date," Betty and Chuck spark a schoolwide frenzy with their hand-decorated sneakers, only to land in detention when Mr. Weatherbee bans the quirky footwear. But when Superintendent Hassle praises the ban as a clever fix for a winter sandal trend causing frostbite elsewhere, the principal not only frees the duo but embraces their stylish footwear with surprising enthusiasm. Written by George Gladir and illustrated by Stan Goldberg, with inks by John Lowe, colors by Barry Grossman, and letters by Bill Yoshida, the cover by Stan Goldberg and Bob Smith captures the lighthearted chaos of the moment.

Betty and Chuck create a craze for sneakers hand-decorated by Chuck. Mr. Weatherbee bans the bizarre footwear and sends them to detention. But Superintendent Hassle, who finds girls in other schools getting frostbite due to the fad of wearing sandals in winter, congratulates Weatherbee on shrewdly setting up a healthier counter-fad. The delighted principal frees Chuck and Betty, and embraces the decorated sneakers.
