The spiritually curious George Blake receives a ghostly visitor—the headless shade of Roger Rankin, a man murdered twenty years ago at nearby Alwyn Castle—who reveals the location of a legendary Crusaders' treasure hidden beneath the castle's depths. Rankin and the spectral Black Knight have summoned Blake with an unusual proposition: recover the gold themselves and break free from the torment of Mildred, Rankin's vengeful widow, who now guards the hoard in the spirit world. Blake accepts the midnight rendezvous, drawn by promises of wealth despite warnings from his frightened fiancée.
Professor Grimes discovers an ancient flute on a misty beach and discovers it emits strange, unheard notes that crack open a hidden cave—where the skeletal remains of three witches spring to life, compelling him to play for their eternal sabbat dance. When the witches demonstrate their supernatural power over both the dead and the living, Grimes finds himself trapped between the terror of what he's witnessed and the threat of death should he speak of it. By morning, his fellow professors Burke and Duncan are skeptical of his story, but Grimes becomes obsessed with finding the flute again—unaware of the dark price of summoning forces that refuse to be silenced.
Inspector Vidac investigates a gruesome string of grave robberies plaguing Paris, convinced the stolen bodies are hidden beneath the city's sewers—a theory his skeptical superior dismisses outright. When Vidac ventures underground to prove his hunch, he discovers something far worse than he imagined: pale, hunched creatures dwelling in the darkness below, engaged in their own sinister purposes. Now trapped between the monsters of the deep and the law closing in above, Vidac finds himself caught in a nightmare of his own making.
When medical students Jim Granger and Harry Burns play a cruel prank by placing a cadaver in their sleeping classmate Paul's bed, they set in motion something far more sinister than they bargained for—the corpse of John Brogan awakens, and Paul is nowhere to be found. As the horrified students realize that their friend's spirit has somehow been trapped in the dead man's body, they watch helplessly as Brogan assumes Paul's identity and life, complete with knowledge of his private affairs. What begins as a tasteless joke spirals into a night of dancing, drinks, and mounting dread as the reanimated corpse drives the terrified students into the darkness—with a grotesque reckoning in mind.
