Billy the Kid drifts into Mustang Springs searching for peace and quiet, only to become embroiled in a conflict with a troublemaker named Tuttle who he defeats in combat. The issue also contains a backup story, "The Hostiles," which depicts early American conflicts with Native Americans, including a duel between Chief Black Hawk and white troops, and an account of the Sauk tribe's resistance against white settlers. The main story concludes with Billy escaping a gang of bushwhackers after defending a rancher's property from cattle rustlers.

When a beautiful Mexican girl convinces Billy the Kid to renounce violence, he finds his pacifist vow tested when Garr Viggs and his vengeful gang ride into Santa Tomas to settle an old score. Rather than face them with guns, Billy devises an unconventional plan—one that relies on the help of local friends, some ingenious traps, and a healthy dose of frontier cunning. Will the reformed outlaw prove he can handle danger without his iron, or will his promise crumble under pressure?

Billy the Kid

Billy the Kid drifts into Mustang Springs seeking peace, only to find a rancher named Aaron Tuttle under siege by the ruthless Buckmann brothers—three red-headed gunfighters bent on stealing the valley. When Tuttle's own burned-out ranch leaves him ready to surrender, Billy stakes his meager $23 to buy the deed and take the fight to the Buckmanns himself. A bold plan involving a stampede and a sheriff's badge sets up a final reckoning in town that will determine who controls Mustang Valley.
