Billy the Kid, a young outlaw, returns home wounded after a gunfight, where his family tends to his injuries. Despite his mother's pleas for him to settle down and the townspeople's hopes that his gang has been defeated, Billy insists he must leave alone to protect his family from danger. As Billy rides away into the sunset, the narrator reflects that his name will never be forgotten, concluding the tale of the outlaw's brief homecoming.
