Boys' and Girls' March of Comics #94
In "The Precious Seed," written by Gaylord Du Bois and illustrated by Jon Small, the Pawnee scout Antelope Man leads a small group on a mission to secure seed corn, encountering danger and unexpected connections along the way. After rescuing the injured Hopi Crow-Hop from Apache raiders and forging a bond with Chief Lolomaie, tensions rise when Crow-Hop’s sister, Swallow-In-Flight, catches the eye of the enigmatic Fox Brother. As the Pawnee prepare to leave, a failed Apache attack leaves Fox Brother wounded, and a quiet moment of ceremony sees him wedded to Swallow-In-Flight, his future sealed by a prayer to the Father of Spirits. The cover by Jon Small captures the solemnity of the gathering, a free comic from 1953 that stands as a quiet, character-driven story of alliance and hope.
