Mary discovers Dix's opening night performance is being attended by June and decides to sabotage the event by arranging for Ted Hayden, a wealthy playboy, to be present, hoping he will distract June so she can win Dix back. Through scheming and manipulation at an opening night party, Mary attempts to separate Ted and June, but Ted ultimately chooses to stay with June, leaving Mary heartbroken as she realizes she has lost Dix to June's company.

A young woman defies her aristocratic father to pursue two passions: Dix Barrow, a trumpet virtuoso who emerged from her family's plantation, and the raw, authentic jazz they make together—until their rise from New Orleans jam sessions through Chicago clubs and Paris cabarets brings them to the threshold of Broadway stardom, where everything they've built together faces an unexpected test.
