Nov 1952 · Horwitz · 8d [0-0-8 AUP]
“The Lost Tribe of the Underworld”

In "The Lost Tribe of the Underworld," Fred Meagher crafts a gripping tale of survival and mystery as Buffalo Bill ventures into a hidden cavern after a papoose tumbles into a hidden river. With Tall Bear nearly drowned and the child’s fate uncertain, Bill dives in to rescue the baby, only to discover a forgotten tribe of renegade Indians living in the depths. Cover by Maurice Bramley captures the stark contrast between the surface world and the eerie underground realm, setting the stage for a tense encounter between outsider and outcast.

While Bill recovers from his encounter with Scar Scanlin Sally and Blue Bird argue over him. Renegade Indian Tall bear looks on, and as they tussle they bump a rescued papoose into a hole. The child safely falls into an underground river below, Tall Bear tries to rescue the child but nearly drowns himself. Bill descends, swims after the baby and encounters a tribe of starving renegade Indians living in the subterranean cavern. Black Bird recognizes their leader, Black Bull, and tells of how they were driven from their people as renegades. Meanwhile, Bill fears they might eat the papoose.
