About this Issue

Captain Britain and the Mighty Defenders #1 marks the first dedicated spotlight on Dr. Faiza Hussain as Captain Britain in her own titled series — a milestone for representation, given that she is a British-Pakistani Muslim doctor and one of the most culturally specific characters in Marvel's UK publishing history. The issue also introduces the entire Battleworld team known as the Mighty Defenders, with all five members — Rescue (Ho Yinsen), She-Hulk (Jen Walters), Spider-Man (Hobie Brown), Kid Rescue (Toni Yinsen), and White Tiger (Ava Ayala) — making their first appearances in this alternate-reality configuration. As a Secret Wars tie-in, the series is notable for using the Battleworld premise to ask pointed political questions about sovereignty, borders, and state violence in a way that multiple critics and academics treated as genuine social commentary rather than mere adventure storytelling. It also reunited longtime Captain Britain collaborators Al Ewing and Alan Davis in a project that drew a direct creative lineage from two beloved, cancelled fan-favorite series.

History

The series was conceived as a deliberate mashup of two recently concluded Marvel titles — Captain Britain and MI:13 and The Mighty Avengers — making Al Ewing, who had written The Mighty Avengers and previously used Faiza Hussain as Captain Britain in an Age of Ultron tie-in issue (Avengers Assemble #15AU), the natural choice to write it. Ewing has said his motivation was simply to give Faiza-Cap another turn in the spotlight. Marvel paired him with Alan Davis, one of the most acclaimed artists associated with the Captain Britain legacy, whose inks were provided by long-time collaborator Mark Farmer. The two-issue limited series was published under Marvel's Warzones! imprint as part of the line-wide Secret Wars 2015 event, with a standard cover by Davis/Farmer and a variant cover by Frazer Irving; it was released on July 15, 2015 and subsequently collected in a trade paperback edition of Captain America and the Mighty Avengers.

Trivia · 8 facts

  • Written by Al Ewing with pencils by Alan Davis, inks by Mark Farmer, colors by Wil Quintana (interior) and Jordie Bellaire (cover), and letters by Travis Lanham.
  • Released July 15, 2015 (cover-dated September 2015); a two-issue limited series published under Marvel's Warzones! Secret Wars imprint.
  • First appearances of the Battleworld versions of the Mighty Defenders as a team, including: Rescue/Baron Ho Yinsen (Earth-14029), She-Hulk/Jen Walters (Earth-14029), Spider-Man/Hobie Brown (Earth-14029), Kid Rescue/Toni Yinsen (Earth-14029), and White Tiger/Ava Ayala (Earth-14029).
  • Features Dr. Faiza Hussain (Earth-61112) as Captain Britain — a character originally created by Paul Cornell and Leonard Kirk in Captain Britain and MI:13 #1 (May 2008) — here in her first starring role in a titled series under that identity.
  • The story's central world-building conceit inverts Iron Man's origin: in Yinsen City, Ho Yinsen survives the cave escape while Tony Stark dies, and Yinsen goes on to build a utopian realm of peace and technology.
  • The neighboring antagonist domain, Mondo City, is a Judge Dredd-style fascist futuropolis originally invented by writer Jeff Parker; Boss Cage serves as its Dredd analog, and multiple reviewers noted the deliberate 2000 AD pastiche in both the characters and Ewing's caption style.
  • Issue #1's story title is 'Theirs Is a Land with a Wall Around It…' — the first half of a lyric from Billy Bragg's song 'Between the Wars,' completed by issue #2's title.
  • Both issues were reprinted twice each according to the Marvel Database, and the complete two-issue run was collected in the Captain America and the Mighty Avengers trade paperback.
