“Captive in Boreala”

In "Captive in Boreala," Cerebus—still a mercenary with a taste for trouble—plunges into a forgotten temple dedicated to the Dark Demon Khem after a clash with northern barbarians. With the Eye of Terim within reach and the spirits of past explorers trapped in the ruins, he must decide whether greed or survival comes first. Written and illustrated entirely by Dave Sim, this issue blends perilous adventure with eerie mystery, all rendered in Sim’s stark, expressive style. The cover by Dave Sim captures the moment of Cerebus’s fall, a single frame of tension that sets the tone for a journey into the unknown.

During a battle between Cerebus' party of mercenaries and northern barbarians, Cerebus topples off a cliff and plunges into a temple dedicated to Khem, the Dark Demon. He also learns that a priceless gem, the Eye of Terim, can be found nearby. Greed gets the better of caution, and Cerebus barely manages to escape with both the gem and his soul. In the process, he also manages to free the souls of previous explorers, thereby weakening Khem drastically. Returning to the battleground, Cerebus realizes there were no survivors on either side. Shrugging, he heads for warmer climes.
