Felipe Alou grows up poor and hard-working in Santo Domingo, eventually entering minor league baseball in the US. An old friend back home and a teammate in the US both urge him to become a Christian, but he fears that such a commitment would interfere with his baseball career. When Alou is called up to the majors his Dominican friend sends a telegram assuring Alou of his prayers. Touched by the financial sacrifice entailed in the telegram, Alou turns to prayer himself. He finds his greatest joy in telling others about Christ.
