“The Mystery of the House of Seven Gables”

A 2005 DC Archives edition brings back the pulpy adventure of "The Mystery of the House of Seven Gables," a story written, drawn, inked, and lettered entirely by Ed Wheelan. When Lt. Dangerfield is rescued from a South Sea isle by the local woman Kalua, he finds himself mistaken for a deity—and later, the unexpected arrival of a Japanese cruiser commander sets off a chain of events that leads to a dramatic reunion with General McGruff and a long-awaited proposal. The cover, by Frank Harry, captures the story’s swashbuckling tone with a striking, period-accurate design.
