“The Beginning”

In "The Beginning," Ray Torres awakens to a startling truth: he’s been chosen by "The Legacy" to become the Cosmic Guard for his sector, armed with powers to face the Genociders. After fleeing the St. James Orphanage—where he discovers the supervisors are murdering children for their organs—Ray is guided by the mysterious Dark Paladin. When he finally acts to save an orphan, his intervention ends in a brutal fall from the building’s roof. Written and illustrated by Jim Starlin, with cover art by Starlin, this pivotal issue blends cosmic destiny with raw human stakes, all rendered in Starlin’s signature style and June Chung’s vivid colors.

While Ray Torres is asleep, the Dark Paladin explains to him that "The Legacy" chose him to be this space sector's Cosmic Guard, giving him many powers that he will need to stop the alien menace of the Genociders. After waking up at the St. James Orphanage, he finds out that the supervisors kill kids to sell their organs. Dejected he falls asleep and the Dark Paladin advises him on how to stop the evil men. However, after infiltrating the supervisors' office and computer, he sees them about to eliminate one of the orphans and so immediately intervenes, but is thrown off the building’s roof.
