After Crawford mysteriously disappears, FBI agents discover his identity and track him to a hideout in More House, Missouri, where they apprehend him in a shootout. The story culminates with Tony, a member of Big Korney's gang who had befriended Crawford, being forced to kill the watchman and ultimately meeting his own death when the police close in on the gang's operation, reinforcing the moral that crime does not pay.
Two small-time crooks named Steve Zike and Tony claw their way up through Buffalo's underworld in the late 1920s, willing to do whatever it takes—theft, murder, betrayal—to grab power and keep it. As they scheme their way into control of a criminal gang and eliminate anyone who stands in their way, Mr. Crime watches their rise with dark amusement, knowing that the throne they've fought so hard for comes with a price they can't yet imagine.
