An agent named Robert, posed as a messenger, encounters a woman named Lili Larve at a social gathering where he attempts to charm her and arrange a boat trip. When interrupted by a friend, Robert plays poker with a Texas oil man named Nicky, who wins a substantial sum, and later stages a robbery to make off with the money without suspicion. A second story depicts a ship's crew facing a curse after encountering a vessel where a captain and crew drowned; Mr. Ryan, a new crew member, earns the captain's respect by remaining composed during a prayer service and proves himself a capable seaman despite initial tension. A third story involves a man named Anton hiding from a meat contractor and later kidnapped by prison escapees searching for information about a diabetic diet and a Dr. Jan Falk, whom the protagonist manages to escape and warn before the escapees are apprehended.
